Recaps of Gender & Sexuality Class Now Available
Hey church!
Whether you missed a class or two, couldn't come to any, or simply want a refresher, all of the content from May's class, "Not Our Own," is now available in podcast form.
This isn't a simple survey of what comes up when you Google bible passages about this stuff. It takes a look at history, culture, science, terms, language, and even that often-cited argument that homosexuality was never originally in the bible to begin with. You can find all of the episodes at myvillagechurch.com/notourown or on our regular podcast feed.
Here's a breakdown:
Introduction (1 Corinthians 5-6)
Culture of the Bible
Genesis 1-2
Genesis 3
Same-Sex Sexuality in the Old Testament
Same-Sex Sexuality in the New Testament (Part One)
Same-Sex Sexuality in the New Testament (Part Two)
Orientation, Attraction, & Behavior
Gender Terms & Trends
Biological Sex
Gender Identity
Gender Roles & Expression
There's almost six hours of teaching in these 12 episodes. That might seem a little overwhelming, but the topic deserves an honest, comprehensive look - especially within the church, which isn't always known for being well-informed, well-rounded, and nuanced in this particular area. Hopefully, the way I've chunked out the content will make it easier to digest. It's a lot, but it's worth it!
For those of you who would prefer to read, these three books were among the most accessible and helpful that I read, consulted, and would affirm:
People to Be Loved: Why Homosexuality Is More Than Just an Issue, by Preston Sprinkle
Embodied: Transgender Identities, the Church, and What the Bible Has to Say, by Preston Sprinkle
Finally, putting all this together wasn't meant to be the end of a conversation. Later in the summer, we'll have an open, after-gathering time of question-and-response for continued dialogue. And if anyone wants or needs to talk about this further in any way, you can always reach out to us at info@myvillagechurch.com.
Thanks all! I hope this serves you well.
