Team Member Expectations

What are Serve Teams?

As the universal church is expressed in local churches, so local churches are expressed in local church members. Local church members are the local church! “Just as Christ came not to be served, but to serve…” so all who are in Christ are called to serve - faithfully, fruitfully, willingly, and humbly. Each member of The Village family gets to do so by engaging the mission, alongside a family of servants.

Serve teams are one way we try to contribute to and benefit from the gift of a new spiritual family by making this abstract reality more tangible. Teams are smaller, more mobile expressions of the Village that help us serve one another by carrying out some basic logistics that help build the family.

What are our expectations for serving on a team?

There are as many ways to serve around here as there is diversity of gifts among us, but a few things are true no matter where you are serving! We’re excited to have you join the mission and want to share FIVE ESSENTIAL ASKS with you. These are servant qualities that help keep teams a healthy place to serve the body with the body.

1. Contribute to and Consume Team Communication Effectively

  • Sometimes it’s easiest to just communicate your needs and or read what applies to you; however, one of the best ways you can serve your team is by reading team communications on a regular basis.

  • Manage your notifications in a way that keeps you informed and available. How will you know if the team needs someone last minute if you’ve silenced your notifications AND don’t check in regularly?

Initiate effective communication. If something was left unclear, ask.

  • Communicate directly with individuals whenever possible and keep group communication channels clear for the important stuff.

2. Be Available

  • Be generous with your knowledge, skills, and time.

3. Be Consistent

  • Know what time you’re needed and be there.

  • Know what your commitment includes and be faithful to it.

4. Be Teachable

  • Start out learning the established routines and procedures for your team.

  • Learn why things are done a certain way.

  • Carry-out your tasks in a way that supports the mission.

5. Be Considerate to Fellow Team Members

  • On a team your words and actions (or lack thereof) affect others serving on the team.

  • Assume the best intention in others, especially when your perception is otherwise.
